Frequently Asked Questions
Murlz is currently an MVP. Features, availability, limits, and interface details may change as the app is tested and improved.
What is Murlz?
Murlz is an augmented reality app for placing virtual text graffiti, called Marks, on real-world buildings and surfaces. Marks are digital only: they do not alter physical property and do not give anyone permission to trespass or physically mark a location.
Which devices and locations are supported?
The MVP targets Android devices that support Google Play Services for AR (ARCore), the Geospatial API, and the required camera and location features. VPS and Streetscape coverage depend on Google’s availability in the area, so the app may work better in some streets and cities than in others.
How do I create a Mark?
Tap Add, enter your text, choose a font and color, and continue to Preview. Aim at a supported wall or building surface, adjust the size and rotation, then tap to place the Mark when the preview is valid.
Why can’t I place a Mark?
Check that camera and precise location permissions are enabled, the AR session and VPS are ready, and the preview is on a detected surface. Placement can also be blocked if the text fails publication checks, the Mark would overlap another Mark, or it does not fit on the surface.
Which achievements are available in the MVP?
The MVP shows two achievements: Author grows as you place Marks, and Explorer grows as you discover other users’ Marks. Each has five tiers and can award Presence. Other achievement tracks are not part of the MVP interface.
Who can see my Marks?
Marks are shared content. Users near the saved real-world location may see the Mark text, placement, generated display name, rank, and social signals. Location accuracy and loading range can vary with device, VPS quality, connectivity, and feature access.
How do I find nearby Marks?
Use Search mode to show pulsing markers for loaded Marks. Move safely through the area and point the camera around you. A Mark may not appear if it is outside the loading radius, has been removed or censored, connectivity is unavailable, or the AR location is not accurate enough yet.
Can I edit, move, or delete a Mark?
You can edit the text, reposition, or delete your own eligible Marks from the action panel. Already censored Marks cannot be edited. Account deletion permanently removes your Marks together with your profile and progression data, subject to the limited retention described in the Privacy Policy.
Why was my text blocked or censored?
Before publication, Murlz blocks links, contact details, exact addresses, wallet-like strings, handles, and common spam or promotional patterns. Submitted text may then be checked by automated moderation. Profanity may be masked by word, while harmful or reported content may be fully censored or removed. Moderation can be imperfect and may change after additional reports or review.
What does the NSFW setting do?
The NSFW setting becomes available after you link a Google or Apple account. It controls whether raw profanity is shown on your device. It does not bypass publication rules or display content that is fully censored by AI or the community.
How do reports work?
Open another user’s Mark and choose Report when the content violates the rules or creates a safety concern. The Mark is hidden from your current view immediately, and the report is sent to the moderation system. Weighted community reports can censor a Mark and can contribute to moderation strikes or account restrictions.
What are Sparks, Presence, and ranks?
A Spark is a free social reaction that each user can give once per Mark. Presence represents long-term progress and is never spent. You earn Presence by placing Marks, receiving eligible Sparks, and reaching tiers in the Author and Explorer achievements. Presence determines your rank, from Observer through Ghost.
What can I do with another user’s Mark?
In the MVP, you can give one free Spark per Mark or submit a Report when content breaks the rules or creates a safety concern. Actions that modify another user’s Mark are not available.
What limits apply in the MVP?
All MVP users have the same feature access. The placement system supports a Mark size of up to 100 meters, and nearby Marks can load within up to 400 meters when device capability, location accuracy, VPS coverage, and connectivity allow. These are technical maximums, not guarantees.
Can I take photos or record video?
The app can capture the AR screen and save photos or videos to your device gallery. Murlz does not intentionally upload those captures to its backend in the MVP. You are responsible for bystanders, private places, personal data, copyrighted material, and other users’ Marks visible in anything you record or share.
What data does Murlz use?
Core AR features use the camera, device sensors, precise location, ARCore Geospatial processing, and saved geospatial placement data. Shared features use Supabase for the backend and anonymous authentication. Text submitted for moderation may be processed by OpenAI. See the Privacy Policy for the complete details and retention rules.
Do I need an account?
The app may create an anonymous Supabase account when you first perform an intentional write action, such as creating a Mark, giving a Spark, reporting content, or opening your profile. Because the MVP may not provide reliable account recovery on every device, do not treat uninstalling the app as an account-deletion method.
How do I delete my account?
Open Profile and choose Delete Account. Deletion is irreversible and removes the authentication identity, profile, generated display name, Marks, progression data including Presence, ranks, and achievements, and related account activity. Reports about other users’ content may be retained without your identity, and a one-way device hash may be retained for sanctioned accounts to prevent ban evasion.
Does Murlz work offline?
Shared Marks, anonymous authentication, moderation, and geospatial loading require network access. Camera tracking may continue briefly without a connection, but creating, synchronizing, or reliably restoring shared Marks is not guaranteed offline.
How should I use Murlz safely?
Stay aware of traffic, people, obstacles, and your surroundings. Do not use the app while driving, cycling, crossing a street, entering restricted areas, or trespassing. AR, GPS, VPS, and anchors can drift or be inaccurate, so never use Murlz for navigation, emergencies, legal boundaries, or safety-critical decisions.
